Potassium perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS-K, CAS 2795-39-3) is an organofluorine surfactant widely used industrially for its excellent chemical stability and surface activity. As the potassium salt of PFOS, it’s key for chromium mist suppression in electroplating (forming stable foam to reduce toxic emissions), and also acts as a wetting agent and fluoroprotein firefighting foam additive.

Its fully fluorinated 8-carbon chain and sulfonate group give it hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. However, its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation have led to strict Stockholm Convention regulations, limiting use to industrial scenarios without alternatives. It requires sealed storage (typically 25kg drums) and avoidance of >300°C decomposition to prevent hazards.
