Products Description of 2-Phenoxyethanol CAS#122-99-6
Phenoxyethanol is a traditional preservative. It is a colorless, slightly viscous oily liquid with a faint aromatic odor and a burning sensation. Slightly soluble in water and almost insoluble in mineral oil, it is miscible with acetone, ethanol, and glycerin in any ratio. Phenoxyethanol exerts a significant bactericidal effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and also inhibits both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its antibacterial mechanism involves acting on the bacterial cell membrane: it increases the permeability of potassium ions and reduces enzyme activity, thereby inhibiting cell growth to achieve antibacterial effects. When used alone as a preservative, it has poor efficacy at low concentrations, while high concentrations may cause skin burning and stinging. Therefore, it needs to be used in combination with other preservative ingredients.
