Melamine, with common names including "melamine", "protein essence", and "mi'an", is a triazine-based nitrogen heterocyclic organic compound for chemical use. It presents as white monoclinic crystals with almost no odor, has a solubility of 3.1g/L in water at room temperature, dissolves in formaldehyde, acetic acid, hot ethylene glycol, etc., and is insoluble in acetone and ether. Due to its harm to the human body, it is not permitted for food processing or as a food additive. However, certain unscrupulous operators have adulterated dairy products with melamine to manipulate nitrogen content in protein tests.
