Products Description of Trichlorosilane CAS#:10025-78-2
Under room temperature and pressure, trichlorosilane is a colorless, volatile liquid with a pungent odor. It flows easily and is highly flammable in air—even at temperatures below -18°C, it still poses a fire risk. When it comes into contact with an open flame, it burns intensely, producing red flames and white smoke, and generates silicon dioxide (SiO₂), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and chlorine gas (Cl₂). The chemical reaction is as follows: SiHCl₃ + O₂ → SiO₂ + HCl + Cl₂.
Vapors of trichlorosilane can mix with air to form explosive gas mixtures across a wide range of concentrations, and intense explosions may occur when heated. Its thermal stability is better than that of dichlorosilane; at 900°C, it decomposes into toxic fumes including hydrogen chloride (HCl), chlorine gas (Cl₂), and silicon (Si).
When exposed to moisture, it produces fumes and reacts violently with water. The reaction equation is: 2SiHCl₃ + 3H₂O → (HSiO)₂O + 6HCl. It decomposes in alkaline solutions and releases hydrogen gas, following the reaction: SiHCl₃ + 3NaOH + H₂O → Si(OH)₄ + 3NaCl + H₂. Contact with oxidizing substances can trigger explosive reactions.
It reacts with acetylene, hydrocarbons, and other organic hydrocarbons to produce chlorosilanes. For example: SiHCl₃ + CH≡CH → CH₂CHSiCl₃ and SiHCl₃ + CH₂=CH₂ → CH₃CH₂SiCl₃. In the presence of lithium aluminum hydride or lithium borohydride, trichlorosilane can be reduced to silane.
If the container holding it is subjected to strong impact, liquid trichlorosilane will ignite. It is soluble in solvents such as benzene and ether. Anhydrous trichlorosilane does not corrode iron or stainless steel, but when moisture is present, it can corrode most metals.
