Product Details

Products Description of Maleic anhydride CAS# 108-31-6

Cis-butenedioic anhydride, also known as "maleic anhydride", is the anhydride of cis-butenedioic acid (maleic acid). It is a colorless or white solid with a sour taste at room temperature, having a molecular formula of C₄H₂O₃ and a molecular weight of 98.06. Needle-shaped crystals can be obtained from chloroform or ether. Its melting point is 60℃, boiling point is 82℃ (at 1.8665 kPa), and relative density is 1.31460. It is easily soluble in acetone, chloroform and ether, and slightly soluble in petroleum ether. When dissolved in water, it forms cis-butenedioic acid; when dissolved in alcohol, it forms esters. It can undergo a diene synthesis reaction (Diels-Alder reaction) with compounds containing conjugated double bonds. It is toxic and has strong irritation to mucous membranes.
