Products Description of Aluminum oxide CAS#1344-28-1

Alumina, commonly known as bauxite, has the chemical formula Al₂O₃. It is a white, refractory powder that is insoluble in water, with key physical properties including a melting point of 2015℃, a boiling point of 2980℃, a relative density of 4.0, and a Mohs hardness of 8.8. It exists in multiple crystal forms, primarily the α and γ variants.

Alumina can be produced by heating and dehydrating aluminum hydroxide. The naturally occurring α-type alumina is called corundum, which has a hardness second only to diamond. Mixing small amounts of impurities can give corundum various colors, resulting in gemstones—such as rubies (containing trace Cr³⁺) and sapphires (containing Ti³⁺, Fe²⁺, and Fe³⁺).

Today, gemstones can also be synthesized through the artificial crystallization of molten alumina. Synthetic gemstones are comparable to natural ones in terms of properties and are widely used in industrial technology. Examples include their use as bearings for high-speed moving machine parts, watch crystals, abrasives, and refractory materials. Corundum crucibles, for instance, can withstand temperatures of up to 1800℃.
