Stannous octoate is prone to hydrolysis and oxidation, so it cannot be applied in combined polyethers (premixes). Its catalytic activity is higher than that of dibutyltin dilaurate.
Stannous octoate works as a catalyst for polyurethane, mainly used in manufacturing soft block polyether-type polyurethane foam. It also serves as a catalyst for products like polyurethane coatings, elastomers, and room-temperature curing silicone rubber. As a divalent tin compound, it may be oxidized into a tetravalent tin compound after foaming; this tetravalent tin compound stays in the foam, acting as an antioxidant without causing any adverse effects on the foam’s performance.
