Product Details

Products Description of Sodium sulfide CAS#1313-82-2

Sodium sulfide has a chemical formula of Na₂S in its basic form, and its more common form is the hydrate Na₂S·9H₂O. Both the anhydrous and hydrated forms are colorless, water-soluble salts, and their aqueous solutions are strongly alkaline. When exposed to moist air, Na₂S and its hydrates release hydrogen sulfide—a gas with the characteristic smell of rotten eggs. Specifically, anhydrous sodium sulfide appears as a yellow to brick-red crystalline mass or fused solid.

Product Application of  Sodium sulfide CAS#1313-82-2

These yellow flakes are produced by fusing sodium carbonate with sulfur. Sodium sulfide dissolves easily in water but has low solubility in alcohol. Because it has a sulfurous odor, people who use it to tint photos or enhance negatives often call it "stinky" informally. Its applications are diverse: it is used in sulfur-containing dyes, and acts as a reducing agent, mordant, flotation agent, leather dehairing agent, papermaking additive—with additional uses in the textile, pigment, and rubber industries.
