Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is commonly known as blue vitriol. It is an odorless blue crystal that dissolves easily in water, and is also soluble in methanol and glycerol, while only slightly soluble in ethanol. It is highly toxic and non-combustible, with a nauseating metallic taste, and turns white when it loses water (dehydrates).

The anhydrous form of this salt is used to detect and remove trace amounts of water from alcohols and other organic compounds, and also acts as a fungicide. Its pentahydrate form has more diverse applications: it serves as an agricultural fungicide, algicide, bactericide, and herbicide; it is used as an additive in food and fertilizers; it is incorporated into insecticide mixtures; it acts as a raw material for manufacturing other copper salts; it functions as a mordant in fabric dyeing; it aids in the preparation of azo dyes; and it is applied in hide preservation, leather tanning, and wood preservation.
