Benzyl benzoate is a simple small-molecule ester compound with an extremely faint resinous aroma. It occurs naturally in Peruvian cedar, Turan cedar, and essential oils such as ylang-ylang oil, hyacinth oil, and night-blooming jasmine oil. Insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents, it is an excellent high-temperature solvent itself and the exclusive solvent for Chemicalbook musk. Its low volatility, superior solvent properties, and the relative stability of its ester group make it suitable for applications in pharmaceuticals and fragrances. Additionally, benzyl benzoate acts as an insecticide against fleas, lice, and ticks—its scabies-killing effect is superior to that of sulfur. It is non-irritating and non-greasy, and can also be used as an insect repellent, often in combination with dibenzyl sulfide.
