Sodium polyacrylate is an odorless, tasteless white powder with strong hygroscopicity; as a macromolecular compound containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, it dissolves slowly in water to form a highly viscous transparent liquid (its viscosity, about 15–20 times that of CMC and sodium alginate, comes from the ionic effect of molecular anionic groups rather than water swelling). It is insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol, does not decompose when heated to 300°C, maintains stable viscosity during long-term storage (and is not easy to corrupt); while heating, neutral salts and organic acids barely affect its viscosity (viscosity rises in alkaline conditions), it is easily influenced by acids and metal ions (which reduce viscosity) but won’t decompose when encountering divalent or higher-valent metal ions.
