Molecular sieve is an aluminosilicate compound with a cubic lattice structure. Its main component is a hollow framework formed by silicon and aluminum connected via oxygen bridges, which contains numerous uniformly sized channels, neatly arranged pores, and a large internal surface area. It also includes metal ions with low charge and large ionic radius, as well as chemically bound water.

When heated, the water molecules in molecular sieves are continuously removed, but the crystal framework structure remains intact—this process forms many cavities of the same size, connected by micropores of uniform diameter. These micropores have consistent diameters: they can adsorb molecules smaller than the pore diameter into the cavities while repelling larger molecules. As a result, molecular sieves can separate molecules with different shapes, diameters, polarities, boiling points, and saturation levels, giving them the ability to "screen" molecules, hence the name. Currently, they are widely used in industries such as chemicals, electronics, petrochemicals, and natural gas.
