Products Description of Methanesulfonic acid CAS#75-75-2
Methanesulfonic acid (CH₃SO₃H, abbreviated as MSA) is a strong organic acid. Large amounts of MSA are formed in the atmosphere through the chemical oxidation of dimethyl sulfide, and it can undergo biodegradation to produce CO₂ and sulfate. Compared with mineral acids, it is less toxic and corrosive, so it is regarded as a green acid; its aqueous solution is also considered a model electrolyte for electrochemical processes.
Chemically, MSA belongs to alkanesulfonic acids, with a methyl group directly attached to the sulfo functional group. It has multiple roles: it acts as a metabolite of Escherichia coli, is classified as both an alkanesulfonic acid and a one-carbon compound, and serves as the conjugate acid of methanesulfonate.

Product Application of Methanesulfonic acid CAS#75-75-2
Methanesulfonic acid is used as a catalyst in organic reactions like esterification, alkylation, and condensation—this is due to its non-volatile nature and solubility in organic solvents. It also takes part in producing various esters, including starch esters, wax oxidate esters, benzoic acid esters, phenolic esters, and alkyl esters.
When reacted with sodium borohydride in the polar solvent tetrahydrofuran, it helps prepare the borane-tetrahydrofuran complex. Its high purity and lack of chloride make it suitable for use in batteries. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is applied to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients such as telmisartan and eprosartan.
Additionally, it is useful in ion chromatography, serves as a carbon and energy source for some gram-negative methylotropic bacteria, and is involved in the deprotection of peptides.
