Product Details

Tetrahydrothiophene CAS#:110-01-0

Tetrahydrothiophene is a cyclic thioalkane, serving as the saturated counterpart of thiophene. It appears as a colorless, transparent, and volatile liquid—insoluble in water but miscible with ethanol, ether, benzene, and acetone.Notably, it emits a strong, unpleasant odor that is stable and not easily dissipated, detectable in air at a concentration as low as 0.01 ppm. It exhibits no corrosiveness to gas equipment, transportation pipeline gaskets, or similar materials, nor does it cause habitual desensitization of the human sense of smell. For these reasons, it is widely used as an odorant in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas, replacing the previously employed odorizing agents such as ethyl mercaptan.

Tetrahydrothiophene CAS#:110-01-0 Application

Tetrahydrothiophene serves dual roles as a solvent and a fuel gas odorant, specifically employed in the stench-based fire safety warning systems of underground mines.Additionally, it has been utilized as an organocatalyst in the reaction of enynediones with benzoic acid, facilitating the synthesis of highly substituted furfuryl alcohol benzoates.
