Product Details

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid CAS# 60-00-4

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA) is a common polydentate ligand. In solution, its hydrogen atoms are easily removed, forming the anionic EDTA⁴⁻. This anion has six binding atoms: two nitrogen and four oxygen.EDTA attaches to metal ions through these six sites, wrapping around the ion to form highly stable complexes. Its strong grip on metal ions is similar to how a crab or lobster clamps objects with its claws—this process is called chelation. EDTA is a highly effective chelating agent precisely because it can deactivate metals via up to six binding sites.
