Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP, Na₅P₃O₁₀, CAS 7758-29-4) is a white crystalline phosphate compound, mainly used as a detergent builder (taking up 50% of its global consumption), water softener, and food preservative (designated as E451). It has strong chelating ability for metal ions like Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺, which boosts cleaning efficiency by stopping scale formation; in food processing, it also helps seafood and meats retain moisture. STPP has three crystalline forms (Phase I, Phase II, and hexahydrate), among which Phase II is the most stable for industrial use.

Product Application of Sodium tripolyphosphate CAS#7758-29-4
Sodium tripolyphosphate is applied in water softening, heavy-duty fabric washing, automatic dishwashing, drilling fluid cleaning, and as a supplement in liquid cattle feed. It also functions as a peptizer, emulsifier, dispersant, and stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide solutions, while acting as a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. Additionally, it is used as a polyanion crosslinker in polysaccharide-based drug delivery systems, a sealant for leaking farm ponds, and a chelating agent for calcium and magnesium. Its applications further extend to ceramics, leather tanning, flame retardants, paper pulping and coatings, textile processing, ore flotation, anticorrosion pigments, and rubber production.
