Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), chemically termed polyethylene glycol mono-4-nonylphenyl ether (with the formula C₁₅H₂₄O(C₂H₄O)ₙ), is a nonionic surfactant. Thanks to its outstanding detergency, wetting, and emulsifying capabilities, it is widely applied in industrial and household cleaning products, pesticides, paints, textiles, and cosmetics. It presents as a pale yellow to brown viscous liquid with a noticeable odor, produced through the polymerization of nonylphenol and ethylene oxide. However, despite its practical value, environmental issues—especially its aquatic toxicity and poor biodegradability—have prompted regulatory restrictions on its usage.
