Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), also referred to as cellulose gum, is a carboxymethyl-modified cellulose derivative and a major anionic cellulose ether. It is synthesized by reacting natural cellulose with sodium hydroxide and monochloroacetic acid, yielding an anionic polymer whose molecular weight varies from thousands to millions.
CMC is white to milky white fibrous powder or granules, with a bulk density of 0.5–0.7 g/cm³. It is practically odorless, tasteless and hygroscopic. The material disperses smoothly in water to create clear colloidal liquids, yet cannot dissolve in organic solvents like ethanol. A 1% aqueous solution normally features a pH value between 6.5 and 8.5, reaching optimum performance near neutral pH 7. Viscosity will drop sharply if pH rises above 10 or goes below 5.
This material possesses favorable thermal stability. Its viscosity rises quickly under 20 °C and changes moderately at 45 °C. Nevertheless, sustained heating over 80 °C may trigger colloid degeneration, leading to weakened viscosity and overall properties. CMC maintains stable status in alkaline environments, whereas acid conditions tend to cause hydrolysis. Precipitation is likely to emerge at pH 2–3 or when multivalent metal salts are added.
