Products Description of Sodium persulfateCAS#7775-27-1

Sodium persulfate, also known as sodium peroxydisulfate, is a white crystalline solid or crystalline powder. It is odorless and tasteless, with the chemical formula Na₂S₂O₈ and a relative molecular mass of 238.13.

It decomposes slowly at room temperature and rapidly when heated or dissolved in ethanol. Upon decomposition, it releases oxygen and forms sodium pyrosulfate. Moisture, as well as metal ions such as platinum black, silver, lead, iron, copper, magnesium, nickel, manganese, and their alloys, can accelerate its decomposition. At high temperatures (around 200℃), it decomposes quickly and releases hydrogen peroxide.

Highly soluble in water (solubility of 70.4 at 20℃), it exhibits strong oxidizing properties. It is highly irritating to the skin, and prolonged skin contact may cause allergies, so caution is required during handling. The oral LD50 in rats is 895mg/kg. It should be stored in a sealed container.

In the laboratory, sodium persulfate is prepared by heating ammonium persulfate with a solution of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or sodium carbonate, followed by the removal of ammonia and carbon dioxide.
