The dodecahydrate exhibits distinct physical and chemical properties. Physically, it presents as white or colorless hexagonal crystals, with a density of 1.62 g/cm³. Its thermal behavior includes melting at around 75°C (under rapid heating), partial dehydration (loss of crystallization water) at 100°C, and retention of the last water molecule even when moderately ignited. In terms of solubility, it dissolves in water at a rate of ~28 g/100 mL (20°C) but is insoluble in alcohol. Chemically, its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline: a 0.1M solution has a pH value of 11.5.
