Allura Red is a deep red, odorless, homogeneous powder. It is soluble in water, glycerol, and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in oils and fats. When dissolved in water, it appears yellowish-red; in neutral and acidic aqueous solutions, it appears red; and in alkaline solutions, it appears deep red. Allura Red exhibits strong light and heat resistance, high color fastness, and good tolerance to aqueous solutions containing sulfur dioxide or with a pH ≥ 3. However, its resistance to alkalis and redox reactions is relatively poor, and its properties are similar to other diazo red pigments.
