Tween 80 is a synthetic non-ionic emulsifier, extensively utilized in cosmetics, the food industry, and pharmaceutical formulations. Its industrial production process involves the reaction of ethylene oxide with sorbitol fatty acid esters and sorbitan fatty acid esters under alkaline catalysis. Specifically, 1 mole of sorbitol or its corresponding sorbitan anhydride reacts with 20 moles of ethylene oxide. This class of emulsifiers was first developed by the American company ICI, which coined the trade name "Tween" for the product line. Different numerical designations (e.g., Tween 60, Tween 80) are assigned based on the type of fatty acid used in synthesis, forming the complete trade name.
