Diethylenetriamine pentamethylene phosphonic acid (DTPMP) is a widely used corrosion inhibitor and descaling agent. It appears as a brown or reddish-brown viscous liquid, is non-toxic, has a molecular formula of C₉H₂₈O₁₅N₃P₅ and a relative molecular weight of 573.2, and is soluble in acidic solutions. In aqueous solutions, it can form multi-ring chelates with metal ions; these chelates are loosely dispersed in water, disrupting the crystalline growth of calcium salts such as carbonate and sulfate scales. This not only exerts a descaling effect but also inhibits the formation of carbonate and sulfate scales.
