Omeprazole CAS#73590-58-6
Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), is indicated for the treatment of conditions including peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It specifically targets the proton pump located in gastric parietal cells, where it is converted to its active sulfenamide form.Subsequently, it forms an irreversible disulfide bond with the sulfhydryl groups of the proton pump (H⁺-K⁺-ATPase), generating a sulfenamide-proton pump complex. This binding inhibits the enzyme’s activity, preventing the transport of H⁺ from parietal cells into the gastric lumen and blocking the final step of gastric acid secretion—resulting in a significant reduction in gastric acid levels in gastric juice. Thus, omeprazole exerts a potent and long-lasting inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion induced by various stimuli. These include basal gastric acid production, as well as secretion triggered by histamine, pentagastrin, and vagal stimulation—even encompassing the gastric acid secretion mediated by dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate, which is resistant to H₂ receptor blockers. This strong and sustained action is attributed to the irreversible nature of omeprazole’s inhibition on the proton pump; acid secretion can only be restored following the synthesis of new proton pump molecules.

Omeprazole CAS#73590-58-6 Application
1.It is indicated for the management of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, stress ulcers, and other related conditions.
2.It is used in the treatment of reflux esophagitis and gastrinoma.
3.This injection also has additional clinical applications, including: ① Addressing gastrointestinal bleeding (e.g., bleeding from peptic ulcers or anastomotic ulcers) and preventing upper gastrointestinal bleeding associated with severe illnesses (such as cerebral hemorrhage and severe trauma) as well as gastric surgery; ② Treating acute gastric mucosal damage caused by stress or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; ③ Preventing gastric acid reflux and aspiration pneumonia in patients undergoing general anesthesia, recovering from major surgery, or in a comatose state.
4.When combined with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, or with metronidazole and clarithromycin, it can effectively eradicate Helicobacter pylori (Hp).
Information regarding omeprazole, including its pharmacological effects, synthetic routes, uses, and precautions, was compiled by the Eastern Editor of Chemicalbook (dated January 22, 2016).
