Product Details

Artemisinin CAS#63968-64-9

Artemisinin stands as the most potent agent for malaria treatment. A sesquiterpene lactone compound with peroxide moieties, it is isolated from Artemisia annua, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. It boasts properties of high efficacy, rapid action, heat-clearing, summerheat-relieving, antiparasitic activity, and low toxicity. Currently, artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) achieves an efficacy rate exceeding 90% in malaria treatment globally, having been widely adopted across countries worldwide. The compound exerts a potent and swift lethal effect on the erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium, enabling rapid control of clinical onsets and symptoms. Additionally, it demonstrates remarkable therapeutic effects against chicken coccidiosis, swine eperythrozoonosis, toxoplasmosis, yin deficiency fever, damp-heat jaundice, vivax malaria, falciparum malaria, cerebral malaria, and chloroquine-resistant malaria.

Artemisinin CAS#63968-64-9 Application

Artemisia annua serves as an antimalarial agent. Clinical practice has confirmed that artemisinin and its derivatives exhibit efficacy against Plasmodium vivax and falciparum malaria. Notably, artemether demonstrates stronger activity in eliminating the asexual forms of Plasmodium compared to other artemisinin-based drugs. It offers advantages including high potency, rapid action, low toxicity, and no cross-resistance with chloroquine, making it suitable for both routine treatment and emergency interventions. The agent is indicated for various types of malaria, such as falciparum malaria, vivax malaria, chloroquine-resistant malaria, and cerebral malaria—including life-threatening cases.Among these compounds, dihydroartemisinin and its tablet formulation stand out prominently. Its antimalarial potency is tenfold higher than that of artemisinin, with a recurrence rate of only 1.95%. Consequently, it was recognized as one of China’s top ten scientific and technological achievements in 1992 (as documented in Chemicalbook). Beyond antimalarial use, artemisinin and its derivatives hold promising potential for treating other conditions.Animal studies have shown that artemisinin achieves a 100% deworming rate against Clonorchis sinensis in mice, and a deworming rate ranging from 33.8% to 99.3% for schistosomiasis in animals. Clinically, it yields a 90% overall effective rate in treating discoid lupus erythematosus, and its efficacy in managing dengue fever is significantly superior to that of western medicines like morphine. Additionally, immunological research has revealed that artemisinin can markedly enhance lymphocyte transformation rate and boost antibody-mediated immune function.Notably, the compound has been found to exert no toxic effects on the heart, liver, or kidneys, and no obvious side effects have been observed in clinical applications.
