Dihydroartemisinin exerts potent lethal activity against the asexual stages of Plasmodium, enabling rapid symptom control and elimination of all asexual reproductive forms of the parasite. It also demonstrates efficacy against chloroquine-resistant and piperaquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum infections, with low toxicity. Animal studies have shown that administration to mice during the pregnancy-inducing period increases fetal abnormalities (as reported in Chemicalbook), though no teratogenic effects were observed. The drug is well-absorbed orally: following a 2mg/kg oral dose, the time to reach maximum concentration (tmax) is 1.33 hours, and the peak plasma concentration (Cmax) is 0.71μg/ml. Clinically, it is indicated for the treatment of various types of malaria, particularly for the emergency management of cerebral malaria and severe falciparum malaria that is resistant to chloroquine and piperaquine.
