Products Description of Sodium dodecyl sulfate CAS#151-21-3
As an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate is a typical example of sulfate surfactants. Known by abbreviations like SDS, AS, and K12, it also goes by names such as sodium coconut sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and foaming agent. On the market, it is usually sold as white to slightly yellow crystalline powder. Non-toxic in nature, it is slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in chloroform and ether, and easily dissolves in water. It works well with anionic and non-ionic surfactants, offering good emulsification, foaming, penetration, detergency, and dispersibility. It generates abundant foam and biodegrades quickly, but its water solubility is not as good as sodium fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (abbreviated AES).

Product Application of Sodium dodecyl sulfate CAS#151-21-3
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) boasts excellent cleaning, emulsifying, and foaming capabilities. It is widely used as a detergent, textile auxiliary, anionic surfactant, toothpaste foaming agent, mine fire extinguishing agent, fire-extinguishing foam concentrate, and emulsifier for emulsion polymerization. It also serves as an emulsifying dispersant in pharmaceuticals, a key ingredient in cosmetics like shampoos, a detergent for wool as well as fine silk and wool fabrics, and a flotation agent in metal beneficiation.
According to GB 2760-96, it is classified as a food industry processing aid, functioning as a foaming agent, emulsifier, and anionic surfactant. Its food applications include cakes, beverages, proteins, fresh fruits, fruit juice drinks, edible oils, and more.
In analytical and industrial material fields, its uses cover:
Acting as a surfactant, cleaner, foaming agent, and wetting agent.
Serving as a relatively low-grade ion-pair reagent—more cost-effective than heptane sulfonate and pentane sulfonate for low-requirement scenarios.
Being used as a raw material for material modification.
Acting as an additive in capillary electrophoresis analysis, typically prepared into molar solutions.
Being applied in other analytical methods such as flow column analysis.
