Tricresyl Phosphate
Products Description of Tricresyl Phosphate CAS#1330-78-5
Tricresyl Phosphate (TCP) is a mixture with a slight pungent odor; among its three isomers, the ortho and meta isomers are liquids, while the para isomer is a crystalline solid. It can be prepared by reacting cresol with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of an aluminum catalyst.
TCP has two main applications: it is used to recover phenol residues from gas plant wastewater, and it serves as a plasticizer in the plastics industry. Plasticizers are substances that enhance the flexibility of plastic materials—adjusting the amount of plasticizer added allows for wide-ranging changes to plastics’ flexibility, hardness, water resistance, and flammability. In some cases, up to 50% TCP is added to polyvinyl chloride[1].
Notably, TCP is toxic to humans: ingestion, inhalation, or even skin absorption can lead to neuropathy, hand and foot paralysis, and may cause death in humans and animals.

Product Application of Tricresyl Phosphate CAS#1330-78-5
Tricresyl Phosphate is used as a plasticizer in vinyl plastics production, a flame retardant, and a solvent for nitrocellulose. It also finds application in cellulosic molding compositions, serves as an additive in extreme pressure lubricants, and acts as a nonflammable fluid in hydraulic systems. Additionally, it functions as a lead scavenger in gasoline (per Yust, Bame, US 2889212, 1959 to Shell) and is used to sterilize specific surgical instruments.
