Products Description of Magnesium oxide CAS#1309-48-4
Magnesium oxide (MgO), commonly named magnesia, is an alkaline earth metal oxide presenting as white powder. Key properties: melting point 2852℃, boiling point 3600℃, relative density 3.58 (25℃); soluble in acids/ammonium salt solutions, reacts slowly with water to form Mg(OH)₂, dissolves in CO₂ aqueous solution to generate Mg(HCO₃)₂; absorbs atmospheric H₂O and CO₂ gradually, emits irritating fumes when heated.
Raw materials for production: magnesite (MgCO₃), dolomite (MgCO₃·CaCO₃), seawater, and magnesium chloride brine blocks (from seawater/brine after bromine extraction). Production processes include thermal decomposition of magnesite/dolomite, calcination of Mg(OH)₂ (from seawater-slaked lime reaction), and calcination of Mg(OH)₂/basic MgCO₃ (from brine block reaction with NaOH/Na₂CO₃). China mainly utilizes magnesite, dolomite, brine, or brine blocks.
Magnesium oxide is the highest-output magnesium compound, accounting for ~75% of magnesium industrial products (Chemicalbook). Grades and applications by calcination temperature:
Below 900℃ (light MgO): Low density, large specific surface area, strong adsorption. Uses: catalyst, rubber filler/accelerator, magnesium cement component, building material flame retardant, pharmaceutical antacid/laxative (for hyperacidity, gastroduodenal ulcers; combined with CaCO₃), feed additive, fertilizer.
950–1050℃ (light MgO): Higher density, optimized particle distribution, good water reactivity. Use: silicon steel sheet isolating agent (forms MgSiO₃ film with surface SiO₂ to prevent sintering/adhesion).
1500–1800℃ (heavy MgO): High density, small specific surface area, thermal stability, low reactivity/hydration rate. Uses: high-temperature refractory material, binder for refractory crucibles/furnace linings.
