Xylitol’s aqueous solution boasts excellent thermal stability, making it an ideal sweetener for formulating health drinks suited for diabetics. It is an approved food sweetener in line with China’s national standard GB2760-1996. It can replace glucose and fructose as an energy source for the human body, while also serving as a key substance for nucleic acid synthesis and detoxification processes within the body.Diabetics often suffer from insufficient insulin secretion, which prevents glucose from converting into glucose-6-phosphate. Notably, xylitol metabolism is independent of insulin, so it does not raise blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Xylitol also possesses a unique ability to inhibit ketone body formation—it can lower transaminase levels in patients with liver conditions, enhance liver function, and promote fat metabolism.Oral absorption of xylitol varies significantly among individuals, a variation that may be linked to intestinal flora, intestinal contents, and genetic factors. The substance is almost fully metabolized in the body, with minimal excretion in its original form via urine. Clinically, it is used to supplement calories and body fluids, improve glucose metabolism, and eliminate ketonemia when the body lacks insulin, acting as an effective regulator for abnormal diabetic metabolism. At conventional doses, xylitol has no significant adverse effects on the liver or kidneys. However, excessive intake can lead to osmotic diarrhea and water balance disorders, so the daily intake should not exceed 50–70 grams. Xylitol is widely applicable in processing condiments, beverages, jams, candies, pastries, and other products. Since yeast and bacteria cannot utilize it, it functions as an anti-caries sweetener and also exhibits preservative properties.
