Dimethyl Sulfoxide#67-68-5
Dimethyl sulfoxide, an organosulfur compound, was first synthesized in 1866 by Alexander Zaytsev within the Russian Empire. As a colorless liquid, it serves as a crucial polar aprotic solvent—one that can dissolve both polar and nonpolar compounds, while also being miscible with an extensive array of organic solvents and water alike.

Product Application of Dimethyl Sulfoxide#67-68-5
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) functions as a polar aprotic solvent, finding application in chemical reactions, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and as a cryoprotective vitrification agent for the preservation of cells, tissues, and organs. In cell freezing media, DMSO plays a role in shielding cells from mechanical damage caused by ice crystal formation. It is employed for the frozen storage of various cell types, including primary cells, subcultured cells, recombinant heteroploid cell lines, hybridoma cell lines, embryonic stem cells (ESC), and hematopoietic stem cells. Additionally, DMSO is often used in combination with bovine serum albumin (BSA) or fetal bovine serum (FBS).
